Almost 90% of the people in the world thought that only a damaged or a burst eardrum caused hearing loss. Actually a damaged or a burst eardrum is only one of the causes and below are some simple explanation for the 3 different types of hearing loss.
What are the 3 types of hearing loss?
- Conductive Hearing Loss - this happens when there is a problem with the outer or middle ear and the 3 little bones in the middle ear.
- Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SNHL) - this is caused by the damage to the inner ear or from the damage along the auditory pathways from the inner earth the brain, also known as nerve-related hearing loss.
- Mixed Hearing Loss - this happens when a combination of conductive and sensorineural hearing loss. This means may be inner ear damage caused by ageing and an additional ear infection at the middle and outer ear.
Causes for Conductive Hearing Loss:
The Outer Ear
- Earwax
- Foreign bodies
- Trauma
- Bacterial infection, fungal infection
- Congenital: genetic (hereditary), non-genetic (drug abuse, pre-maturely born)
The Middle Ear
- Grommets
- Otosclerosis
- Otitis Media (glue ear)
Causes for Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SNHL):
- Sudden hearing loss
- Ototoxicity
- Aging
- Exposure to loud noise
- High blood pressure, high blood glucose level, stroke
- Oxygen deficiency before or during birth
- Auto-immune disease
- Meniere's disease
